The new mechanism for sending direct messages on Twitter to everyone is rolling out, even for non-reciprocal accounts.
Twitter has, in recent hours, introduced a rather significant new feature concerning private communications.
Many have indeed discovered that a new option has been added to their account settings menu.
Across a number of accounts, it is now possible to send direct messages to everyone.
Up until now, the private messaging mechanism required “reciprocity”: if you followed someone and were also followed back by that same account, you could send direct messages.
Therefore, a one-to-one relationship was the essential condition for being able to communicate privately.
From today onwards, however, Twitter allows you to receive messages even from users who do not follow you, provided you select the appropriate option in the settings menu by simply checking the relevant box.
This new feature is certainly not insignificant and, as often happens, presents both advantages and disadvantages.
Certainly, in this way, communication between users will be more direct and without “obstacles”.
Another scenario where this small but important revolution appears very positive is in brand-user interaction: many companies present on Twitter use the social network also for customer support.
By being able to send messages in this new way, information could be exchanged privately without necessarily requiring the company to be our follower.
As mentioned, however, we must also consider the flip side of the coin: this opportunity could indeed be exploited to send spam messages.
Nothing, of course, will prevent you from reverting to the previous situation, no longer allowing the possibility of receiving direct messages from anyone.
