Instagram is now allowing two new photo formats: in addition to the classic square version, horizontal and vertical photos are also being introduced.
This is an apparently minor, yet very significant change, integrated through the rollout of update 7.5 of the app.
Up until now, in fact, only square photos were supported, requiring users to resort to external apps to edit photos with different layouts before uploading them to the image-sharing platform.
Accepting photos – and videos – shot in horizontal and/or vertical format likely signifies a closer alignment with the needs and preferences expressed – more or less directly – by users of the social network.
Furthermore, such a move could also be a way to “close ranks” by enabling everyone to publish directly on Instagram without having to use third-party apps; this way, the platform aims to “poach” and retain subscribers who love communicating through images, by providing all the necessary tools to upload photos and videos without prior external editing.
Once a photo in landscape or portrait format is uploaded, it will appear in its original format in the Instagram feed.
The case is different when viewing your profile’s “home”: in this scenario, the thumbnail of vertical or horizontal images will still be displayed in a square format, with automatic, centered cropping.
