A novelty that went by decidedly unnoticed but is quite significant, relating to some of the most important services offered by Google.
Just a few days ago, it was realized that the Gmail inbox and the Google Plus social network are no longer as closely linked as they were until recently.
The Mountain View giant, in fact, had made signing up for a Google Plus profile, its social network, practically mandatory when a user created a new email account on the Gmail platform.
A “stratagem” to increase the number of Google Plus subscribers, according to many industry observers. A move that was not liked by most, and which the Google staff seems to have remedied.
The novelty was not officially announced with great fanfare; it was simply noticed that, when opening a Gmail inbox, among the final registration steps, a screen appears asking if you also wish to sign up for Google Plus. Right here it is possible to click on “No, thanks,” a possibility that until a few weeks ago was absolutely impossible because it did not exist.
Therefore, Google is backing down and no longer forces its users to become “social” on its platform at all costs.
A small but important revolution, preceded by another novelty to consider: on Google Plus, it has only recently been introduced the possibility of using a pseudonym instead of “first name + last name,” as has been mandatory since the early days of Google’s social network.
In conclusion, anyone can open a Gmail email address without necessarily having to become a Google Plus subscriber. At the same time, however, this option always remains open, not only during registration but also in the future.
The move has been seen as a sort of manifestation of Google staff’s progressive disinterest in the social project which, it must be admitted, simply cannot compete with the giant of all social networks, Facebook.
Actually, in this regard, a Google spokesperson has denied this overly simplistic conclusion, specifying that it is absolutely not true that the company no longer cares about its social side, but rather that this path was chosen following an update that took place in September.
