The search engine Google has been down for a few hours in China, with the most evident problems in Beijing. No official comment from Mountain View.

At the time of writing, the nature of the problem behind Google‘s operational difficulties in China is not yet known. The situation is unclear, but what is certain is that when performing searches on the engine, no results are returned, but error messages are displayed, even though the main page loads and functions regularly.
Other applications, such as maps, also appear to be in normal operational status, only to then experience anomalies and search difficulties as soon as they are used.
It is not currently known whether the situation was caused by “simple” technical glitches, an act of censorship by the local government, or Google’s first step towards moving searches to its Hong Kong page, as rumored last week.
