Google’s headquarters, after reporting a malfunction due to technical problems, reversed course, reporting an attempted censorship by the Chinese government.
There was no shortage of back-and-forth yesterday evening: the search engine Google yesterday produced no results, seeing a total blackout of any type of information, not just concerning topics unwelcome to the Chinese government.
A blackout that Google initially attributed to technical malfunctions, given the redirect process undertaken towards the Hong Kong platform, before concluding “They censored us”.
Beijing’s denial is stark: according to China, yesterday’s problems are solely attributable to Google’s technical issues, not censorship.
The climate is that of a cold war, although it seems the situation has been returned to normal: search has resumed functioning, even if difficulties persist on Google Mobile from mobile phones.
However, neither of the protagonists in this affair seems willing to commit, leaving conclusions to the internet and not issuing official statements.
