News is expected following the press conference announced for today, however, the rumors about the social turn for Gmail are overwhelming.
Although the term social network, in the minds of many, is automatically associated with Facebook, it seems that Mountain View is rather aiming to move in the direction of developing Twitter, the microblogging social network that has conquered more and more internet users, especially overseas.
It appears that Gmail will soon become a comprehensive service for user activities, positioning itself as Inbox 2.0: an evolved email service that would allow updates with users with whom one has decided to connect. Gmail would thus become the hub for individual user activities, allowing them, through their email inbox, to change their status and showcase resources originating from – for example – Picasa and YouTube, integrating what, still very limitedly, already happens with Talk.
The Wall Street Journal is sparsely announcing the social turn for Gmail; however, from Mountain View, silence reigns, awaiting the press conference in the coming hours.
