The advent of Google+ is bringing with it a whole series of other consequences. If yesterday we talked about Facebook’s countermeasures against Google, today we note that Big G is also sharpening its weapons against the most used social networks.
In fact, the news arrives that Twitter has left Google’s SERPs: according to what is learned, the agreement signed some time ago between the two companies has simply reached its expiration date, so tweets will stop being displayed in SERPs in real-time stream format.
Is that all?
It is legitimate to think that perhaps, behind this move, there might be something else: Google entered the social world just a few days ago by introducing Google+ and – if one were to be malicious – the mental association immediately springs to mind that integrating Twitter in SERPs for a long time may have served Big G to “study the enemy” from the inside.
From Google, they simply stated via Search Engine Land that the agreement concluded with Twitter in 2009 “expired on July 2nd“.
From that date, therefore, the Realtime service no longer works, but anything that Google’s crawlers can find will still be offered in SERPs.
Those who wish to check the stream coming from Twitter in real-time can continue to do so, but not on Google: in fact, nothing has changed on Yahoo! and Bing. Neither of these search engines has expressed any intention to discontinue this service.
Although Twitter is sailing at full speed, fortified by new funding and the impressive 200 million tweets sent daily (an incredible, very high figure), it would be short-sighted not to point out the importance of the stream’s presence in Google’s SERPs, a major driver of external traffic that allowed thousands of people to read microposts on Twitter, even without knowing it or being registered.
It’s certainly not to say that the game is over: the possibility of returning to a partnership could always exist. Realistically, however, it is more likely to expect an evolution of Google+ in this direction, with functionalities similar to the just-suspended Realtime.
