Google says goodbye to Picasa, officially announcing its closure in May.
A very important announcement has been made regarding one of Google’s most utilized photo services. The Mountain View giant has officially communicated that Picasa has reached its end. This news comes from an official Google blog post, outlining the plan to close Picasa: the service will cease to exist starting May 1, 2016. Picasa first launched in 2004, becoming a benchmark for those who needed to manage photos primarily, and videos secondarily. However, in recent months, the Mountain View company seems to have reconsidered Picasa’s future and potential, especially considering the recent introduction of “Google Photos.” Indeed, the closure of Picasa is nothing more than the decision by the Big G team to invest time, ideas, projects, and money into the further development of Google Photos, thereby concentrating on a single photographic platform. So, what should users do if they have photos and videos on a Google Picasa account? Google assures that all material can be easily migrated to the Google Photos service; to facilitate this, a dedicated interface has been provided to perform the transfer with just a few clicks, entirely automatically.
The web platform, however, will have an even shorter lifespan: it will stop functioning and being usable as early as March 15; therefore, any operations to be performed after this date can only be completed via Picasa apps.
The apps will continue to be usable, but it’s important to note that no further updates will be released.
