News for those who have a Gmail account: Google enhances communication services, focusing on VoIP and free calls to landlines and mobiles.
The feature is currently available only to users in the United States and Canada, who, for now, will benefit from free calls within the same geographic areas. For all other calls, Google’s proposed rates are discounted and decidedly advantageous, including those for calls to mobile phones worldwide.
The Google innovation in this regard lies in the fact that this new frontier of communication can be utilized even when not connected to Gmail and even when the recipient does not have a Gmail account, thus routing calls directly to landlines or mobile phones. Relative to Google, this is certainly an innovation, but within the broader VoIP telephony market, it represents nothing different from what happens with, for example, a giant in this type of communication: Skype.
Google thus enters the VoIP market, integrating the ability to make calls within Google Talk, Gmail’s chat feature; in this way, contacts in the address book can be easily called, while for all other calls, simply dial the number on the numeric keypad that will appear by clicking on “Call phone”.
After the experimental phase in Canada and the United States, other countries will follow in the coming months.
To introduce the service, Google has created a presentation video.
