Facebook Closes @facebook.com Email Service: What to Do?

Low usage rates have led Facebook staff to close the internal email service on the social network. What is advisable to do to avoid losing received and sent mail?

Facebook is putting an end to a service on its platform that, to be frank, never achieved great success: Facebook mail inboxes are going into retirement.
It was January 2011 when, even in Italy, users of the social network found themselves able to manage a true inbox service, including private messaging, SMS, and email.
With addresses like “username@facebook.com“, Facebook aimed – at least in its initial hypothesis – to increasingly centralize its users’ interpersonal communications, providing a tool that, in a sense, would prevent them from leaving Facebook to check or write emails.
However, the project did not yield noteworthy results, and so now – with the clear awareness that Facebook’s email service was used little or not at all – the social network’s staff has decided to completely shut down this project.
There’s also a second aspect to consider that undoubtedly led Facebook to this decision: the acquisition of WhatsApp has clearly propelled the social media giant in the direction of the ever-growing sector of mobile solutions.
Faster communication than email, so beloved and now established in every corner of the globe.

Regarding the practical implications of closing Facebook Mail, it’s important to note that all emails currently in @facebook.com inboxes will be forwarded to users directly at the email address used during Facebook registration.
The risk is that the indicated account may no longer be active, so it would be advisable to access Facebook Mail now and as soon as possible, in order to first verify your forwarding address.
Secondly, you can then decide to save communications you deem important.
