Facebook: App for Older Mobile Phones Under Study

Facebook is also reaching out to those less accustomed to smartphones and is studying an app for older generation mobile phones.

More and more people are accessing Facebook via smartphone or tablet: the experience of using the social network on the go is now a firmly established practice.
However, not everyone owns a smartphone yet, and many still miss their older mobile phones, with their physical keyboards and few essential functions.
Probably to avoid “leaving behind” this user segment, the Facebook team has apparently been working for some time on creating a specific application for mobile phone use.
The project – whose name is “Facebook for Every Phone” – has already existed for a couple of years and is currently in a good stage of development.
Especially useful in emerging markets – as well as the largest in terms of potential users – the app would therefore also win the favor of several mobile operators, contacted by Facebook executives to find a common path to effectively launch the initiative.
The aim is indeed to devise mechanisms to significantly reduce the data traffic generated by consulting via the app, seeking solutions for special tariffs to have discounted prices or to be able to use the service for free.

On the other hand, the stakes are too high and enticing to let them slip away: Facebook has been working extensively on the “mobile” market in recent months, and not considering users who are less “technologically evolved” – or simply with limited budgets that discourage smartphone purchases – would be a mistake.
Facebook knows this well and apparently is moving precisely in this direction.
