The domain Facebook.it should have led to the official Italian home of Facebook, the social media giant; in reality, until a few days ago, it led to a page full of advertisements and links.
The domain www.facebook.it had been registered by John Michael Preston, an internationally known cybersquatter for having activated many sites with famous company names.
However, Facebook’s management decided to initiate a regular procedure to acquire ownership of the Italian domain. The request was favorably received after an analysis by the Domain Name Dispute Resolution Center (DNDRC) which decreed its assignment to Facebook UK Ltd with the following motivation: “it acknowledges all its objections, from the lack of any title or right to the name to the bad faith on the part of the international cybersquatter John Michael Preston“.
Within 30 days, Italian users will therefore be able to use the .it extension to access Facebook without ambiguity.
