Following the Cambridge Analytica scandal regarding the violation of Facebook user data, many users have stated their intention to delete their profiles. SEMrush, the web marketing platform, has analyzed related searches to identify the trend.

In Italy, over the last month, approximately 22,000 people searched for “how to delete Facebook account”, nearly 40,000 people asked Google “how to delete myself from Facebook”, while the query “delete Facebook” along with related searches was made more than 68,000 times. To talk about trends, March was a month when these web searches showed a 20% growth.
The highest number of requests was observed in the initial days of the scandal, but even in April, users want to know how to delete themselves from the most popular social network.
An increase is also seen in search queries such as “personal data processing”, and “Internet privacy”.
The same situation is occurring in most European countries and the United States: if last year the highest search volume was shown in June and July, reaching about 150,000, by the end of March 2018 it had grown by over 100% to more than 350,000.
The hashtag #deletefacebook began spreading on social media after a tweet from Brian Acton (one of WhatsApp’s founders). By March, it was at the peak of its popularity.
