Facebook is reportedly ready to enter the news aggregator arena and launch Paper, a project in direct competition with Google News and Flipboard.
It’s well-known and evident that Facebook has always aimed to become increasingly all-encompassing. This time, it truly seems to have decided to focus on disseminating news circulating online to offer a broad overview of additional services to its subscribers, without them having to “distract” themselves from the social network in search of information outside the social media pages.
Indeed, the project codenamed “Paper” appears to be on the verge of launch: it would be a news aggregator whose functionality could be similar to that of well-established services such as Google News or Flipboard.
When contacted for more information, Facebook executives released no precise statements, saying they did not wish to comment on rumors or hypotheses in this regard.
It was the website Re/code that broke the story, explaining that Facebook Paper would be a sort of news magazine aggregating diverse sources, likely to be released – perhaps initially in beta and only in certain countries – by the end of January.
The possible and necessary integration methods within Facebook pages are not yet known, but it is hypothesized that Paper could create a separate section, in addition to the timeline: with a click, however, one could easily switch from scrolling through friends’ statuses to browsing news selected by Facebook, based on user preferences and interests.
Certainly, at the time of writing, very little is known about Paper, and the staff working on it seem to maintain maximum discretion.
One thing seems clear: the challenge is therefore open against aggregation information services like Google News and similar ones.
