Poste Italiane in Chaos Due to Server Problems

Queues, chaos, and significant disruptions at the counters: Poste Italiane, since last Wednesday, has been experiencing severe difficulties in offices across Italy due to server problems. Technicians are working, and users are furious.

Poste Italiane is also experiencing server problems: since Wednesday, June 1st, 2011, a series of complete outages on the telecommunications line and slowdowns in usual counter activities have highlighted technical difficulties that are impacting daily operations throughout Italy.
In many cases, users have been unable to complete payment or withdrawal transactions, causing significant frustration, especially concerning time-sensitive deadlines or pension withdrawals.
Although Poste Italiane offices remained open beyond their usual hours, this was not enough to resolve the situation.

What happened at Poste Italiane?
On June 1st, from the opening of the counters until around 11 AM, the central servers of Poste Italiane completely crashed due to technical issues that are still under investigation but appear to be related to the new IT systems.
After 11 AM, there was an initial unblocking of the situation, which at least allowed operations to begin resuming, albeit with continuous problems still manifesting across Italy.
It seems that by late morning today, the situation had almost entirely returned to normal, partly due to postal office closures allowing for more in-depth server work.
This is not the first time there have been “blackout” incidents, especially since the new IT system became operational; however, this is the first time such a situation has persisted for so long.

UPDATE 4:30 PM: The disruptions persist throughout Italy in a patchy manner: in some offices, it is entirely impossible to perform operations, while in others, work is proceeding with great difficulty. In still others, only parcel collection counters are functional, but overall, offices “connected” to the new IT system are the ones experiencing problems. Evidence of this is the fact that the counters at Piazza San Silvestro in Rome are fully operational (and mobbed by users) precisely because they are not connected to the new servers.
