New iPad: Refunds Underway in Australia

Perhaps a precedent is being set: Apple has written to buyers of the New iPad offering them an optional refund, due to some information provided regarding 4G connection.

A curious case emerges from Australian news: it is learned that Apple has sent an email to all purchasers of the New iPad (also known as “iPad 3“) to offer them a full refund.
The decision was likely made to avoid potential class-action lawsuits, as some consumers have already turned to the “Australian Competition and Consumer Commission” association.
The focus is on one of the main features of the New iPad: the ability to browse via 4G connection, on LTE networks.
The super-fast, latest-generation connection has not yet been rolled out in many countries, nor does it exist in Europe, as specified in a previous article on FullPress.
This means that in areas not covered by LTE 4G, the New iPad uses a standard 3G connection: this is exactly what happens in Italy at the moment and in much of the world.
However, this is not entirely the case in Australia, where the possibility to use 4G exists and is provided by the operator Telstra, but as far as we can gather, the technology of the New iPad and Telstra’s are not yet “set” to communicate.
This has led to protests from consumers and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission: New iPad commercials illustrate the tablet’s functionality on LTE networks, thus leading to the belief that the advertising is misleading.

Apple, while deciding to “pre-empt” the legal issue by spontaneously offering refunds to all consumers who feel they have been deceived, defends itself by stating that Apple never claimed the tablet could utilize Telstra’s 4G and that this information has been reported multiple times in the Australian media.
In any case, the Cupertino-based company has committed to changing its commercials and website information regarding the New iPad to make them as clear as possible.
No new information has emerged regarding the alleged overheating issues of the New iPad.
