The brief history of netbooks has already reached its end: production stops from Asus and Acer.
The fate of netbooks doesn’t seem to have been the best: just a few years after their launch on markets worldwide, they are now considered obsolete or, more accurately, unviable and unappealing products, thus not worth further development and production.
This is, in summary, the current situation, as two major companies, Asus and Acer, have officially announced they will stop producing netbooks.
It’s easy to guess the reasons behind this decision: netbooks, despite being promising and useful for many types of users, quickly faced a veritable downfall due to the arrival of tablets.
These latter devices immediately asserted themselves on the market, often replacing netbooks. While convenient for travel and mobility, they were never as practical as a tablet for a large number of people.
There’s also an economic aspect to consider, certainly not to be underestimated: to make a netbook truly appealing from a functional standpoint, more components would have been needed, leading to a price increase that wasn’t entirely “justified” when compared to notebooks or the more recent ultrabooks.
The choice by Asus and Acer today thus completes the picture: Samsung, HP , and Dell had already taken the same path in recent months, channeling more resources towards tablets and ultrabooks, and abandoning netbook production.
It is therefore probable that netbooks will remain on sale throughout 2013 and, in any case, until existing stock is depleted.
Subsequently, production lines will certainly no longer see the release of new models.
The bell has truly tolled for the end of an era that, realistically, never truly began, observing it today with hindsight: even the last two manufacturing companies have decided to abandon the netbook sector, which is therefore destined to disappear totally and rapidly, having only been born in 2007.
