The Facebook SIM Card is about to arrive, enabling quicker updates and interaction on the social network, even without an internet connection.
Facebook has struck a deal with Gemalto, a digital security company; the goal would be the production and subsequent distribution of a Facebook SIM Card, a mobile phone SIM card specifically designed to manage one’s Facebook profile.
If the much-talked-about Facebookphone ever surfaces (though Facebook promptly denies its existence), it’s likely that the Facebook SIM Card could become an integral part of it. However, its application, apparently, will not be necessarily tied to a smartphone as it is today, if one wishes to use a Facebook app or update contacts and status on the go.
The Facebook SIM Card should make even simple mobile phones (not smartphones) useful in this regard, allowing users to receive pop-ups for updates on their Facebook pages; this would be possible because the Facebook for SIM service will operate via the GSM network.
Therefore, updates would be made simply via SMS, as would responses to friend requests or interactions – always textual – on the wall.
Understandably, there will be a cost for this service, but at the moment, as it is still under study, the amount that might be requested for the SIM is unknown, just as it is unknown whether free SMS will be the most credible option or, conversely, if they will have to be paid for, perhaps in the form of a subscription.
The Facebook SIM Card is not exactly revolutionary or entirely new, but it would certainly bring those who don’t own a smartphone even closer.
