Domestic partnerships are recognized by Facebook: two new options for the “Relationship Status” field open this path.
Facebook increasingly a mirror of civil society: the social network giant social network has opened up to domestic partnerships.
What does this translate into? Very simply, the possibility to update one’s relationship status also being able to choose two new options: “Civil union” and “Domestic partnership“, as can be seen from the image accompanying this article.
The original entries are in English and this is no coincidence: the platform Facebook in Italy has not yet been updated with this feature but it is presumed to be only a matter of time.
Facebook’s initiative towards domestic partnerships has not left indifferent, especially the homosexual users registered on the social network and romantically involved in a relationship with a person of the same sex: this novelty has been seen as an act of civility and recognition of no small importance.
Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, has publicly expressed himself: “Today Facebook has sent a clear message in favor of same-sex couples to users all over the world.”
Facebook, committed to curbing homophobic discrimination phenomena 2.0, has long been working on this update to relationship statuses, in collaboration with various associations fighting for the same cause.
Italy, as mentioned earlier, has not yet been included in this option available at least on Facebook, and it is not yet clear if and when this will happen also on local profiles. In the meantime, the group “we ask Facebook for the domestic partnership option in Italy as well” has been created, which is gaining more and more members by the hour.
In fact, the opening of Facebook to domestic partnerships is still at an initial stage: the initiative started in only a few countries, namely the United States, Canada, France, and the United Kingdom.
