Telecom partially blocks P2P, it’s official

Telecom blocks P2P: the nightmare of netizens accustomed to P2P and online sharing is about to come true. Unless you want to pay a surcharge, by opting for one of the probable new tariff plans in effect from March 1st.

Telecom announced that, starting from March 1, 2011 – therefore in a few days – it will update the general contract conditions related to the ADSL offer. The aim has been openly communicated: a rationalization of the available bandwidth is underway, the main point of which will be the limitation of connection speed for bandwidth-hungry services: P2P applications, file sharing, and the like.
The action will be taken – as stated in the official communication issued by Telecom Italia – to safeguard all users, especially during peak traffic hours: by partially filtering P2P transfers, those who use the connection for “simple” browsing should experience speed benefits.
In simple terms, those who need more bandwidth and a larger volume of data to download will soon be able to choose a specific tariff plan, but at a higher cost than currently.
All details, however, will be officially announced starting March 1, 2011.
