New emoticons will soon be available on Facebook: chats and status updates will feature unprecedented emoticons created by a made-in-Pixar artist.
A breath of fresh air on Facebook, this time not related to social functionalities in the strict sense but to purely graphic character.
The social network staff has indeed decided to give a makeover to the now-old emoticons, which have been overused since the days of early chat, or even before from newsgroups and simple emails.
There is therefore the need to give a decisive restyling to the faces that symbolize human moods and reactions, an expedient that has always been used to graphically synthesize users’ extemporaneous thoughts.
So, from Facebook‘s headquarters, the search began for the right person to invent new smileys, and they landed on Matt Jones.
This artist boasts participation in many Pixar projects in his curriculum, the company that has made three-dimensional graphics its strong point, led for a period by Steve Jobs.
In addition to proposing new expressions that can condense human sensations, Matt Jones is also engaged in the challenge of overcoming the classic proposition of yellow, which has always been used for emoticons as far as memory goes.
Naturally, being a commissioned job directly by Facebook, it is easy to think that a shift towards blue, characteristic of the social network since its inception, will probably be opted for.
In addition to facial expressions, the artist also seems to be trying to find graphical expedients that can also partially reproduce gestures and physical components, given that a lot of communication passes through the body and its movements, before words.
It should be noted that Jones is working on this project in a personal capacity, as an external consultant for Facebook: Pixar has no agreement with the social network.
