Facebook has launched the Facebook Gift project, a virtual way to send real gifts to your friends.
There’s a new development in the Facebook universe: it’s called “Facebook Gift” and, exactly as the name suggests, it offers social network subscribers the ability to give and receive gifts.
In practice, this will be a true e-commerce operation branded by Facebook, with a distinct and natural social characteristic: what we could call social commerce.
It’s impossible not to think of how easy it will be to combine the act of giving a gift on Facebook with the spontaneous inclination to post birthday wishes on a friend’s wall when their birthday is announced.
If you wish to complete the gesture by sending a gift, all you need to do is click on the dedicated gift box icon, choose from the available items or services, and “send” it (in this phase, entirely virtually) to the friend in question.
At this point, the recipient of this thought will receive a notification indicating a gift is on its way: they can then choose to accept or reject the gift.
If accepted, the payment process will commence, and the seller will proceed with shipping the gift, which will then become a real item.
The recipient themselves will provide their address to the store, so those wishing to give a gift will not necessarily need to know the recipient’s details.
In case of gift rejection, however, the transaction between buyer and seller will not be completed, and shipping will not take place.
It’s natural that a percentage of the amounts paid for gifts will end up in Facebook‘s coffers, likely providing a good way to monetize, especially now that the company’s stock performance isn’t making investors jump for joy.
Among the initially available gifts are mugs (also customizable), Starbucks gift cards, USB drives, action figures, and much more.
The page dedicated to Facebook Gift has already been set up, but you’ll need to wait a few more weeks for the service to launch in Italy.
