Facebook is gifting its users with free antivirus thanks to a broad alliance established with major security software manufacturers.
More and more often, links to pages or videos appear on Facebook, usually accompanied by shocking captions that encourage clicks: often behind these elements on the wall, there are actually dangerous malware.
Facebook has therefore decided to curb this trend, giving away free antivirus subscriptions to its users valid for six to twelve months.
Far from being a completely selfless and “spontaneous” initiative – so to speak – the decision comes following an agreement reached with the major names in IT security.
From Trend Micro to McAfee, including Norton, Symantec, Sophos, and Microsoft: all have made specific resources available to provide greater IT security to Facebook subscribers, under the coordination of the Facebook Security Team.
By downloading the antivirus of your choice, you will therefore be protected from potentially dangerous clicks, thus achieving two valuable results: from the user’s perspective, you will avoid infecting your PC (Mac or any machine) by clicking on malicious links.
From the perspective of Facebook and all the IT security companies involved in this agreement, the advantage certainly lies in having access to a huge amount of data related to dangerous sites, to more easily update blacklists.
If for software companies this means obtaining millions of new and fresh data in a short time, so as to develop new tools more and more promptly, for Facebook there is the undeniable advantage of being able to curb the virality of certain links, progressively obtaining a cleaner platform.
All free antivirus programs will soon be available to users, simply by accessing the Antivirus Marketplace.
