The vast network of Facebook can assist thousands of people, even in the unfortunate event of various kinds of disasters. This can happen not only through sharing statuses for the organization of aid but also more simply by allowing people to communicate their status.
In these hours, the Facebook staff has indeed promptly launched the new service called “Safety Check”: it is a tool activated just a few hours after the terrible and devastating earthquake in Nepal.
What is Safety Check for and how does it work in practice?
Through the geolocation system that can be activated on Facebook, users who are found to be in areas affected by natural calamities, environmental disasters, or particularly serious incidents will receive a message from Facebook’s Safety Check service.
On the main screen, you will read “Are you okay?”, thus simply asking subscribers in certain geographical areas if everything is alright. By answering the question, you will automatically be able to post a status update that friends and relatives can read, to ascertain that you are safe and sound or – unfortunately – that you are in danger or in difficulty.

Prompt action in the event of tragedies such as the earthquake in Nepal or terrorist attacks often makes the difference, so Facebook could become a truly particularly useful tool for reassuring friends and relatives, but also, at the same time, for activating a network of contacts and possibly real-time aid.
