Amazon has announced the start of construction of a new Distribution Center in Passo Corese, a hamlet in the Municipality of Fara in Sabina (RI), 30 km from Rome, to meet the growth in demand in Italy.
The new logistics hub, which will be Amazon’s second Distribution Center in the country, will begin operations in autumn 2017. Amazon will invest €150 million in the new 60,000 sqm operational unit, also boosting the local economy’s development. Together with the Castel San Giovanni distribution center, the new Passo Corese operational unit will enable Amazon to manage current and future demand, both in Italy, where an increasing number of families choose Amazon.it for their purchases, and in Europe. Both Distribution Centers will ensure Amazon customers worldwide the fast and reliable service they are accustomed to, especially during peak periods before holidays.
The new Distribution Center is scheduled to begin operations in autumn 2017. Amazon employee salaries are among the highest in the logistics sector and also include benefits such as discounts on purchases from Amazon.it, health insurance, and private medical care. Amazon also offers opportunities such as the Career Choice program, which offers employees who intend to specialize in a specific field up to 95% of the cost of tuition and textbooks for professional courses for four years.
Amazon: Investments in Europe and Italy
2015 was a record year for job creation by Amazon in Europe: over 10,000 new permanent jobs were created, bringing the company’s European workforce to over 40,000 employees. Since 2010, Amazon has invested over €15 billion in Europe in infrastructure and distribution services, customer services, regional data centers like Amazon Web Services, research and development, and more.
Since starting its operations in Italy in 2010, Amazon has invested over €450 million in the country and created 1,700 jobs.
The Castel San Giovanni Distribution Center, which employs over 1,000 people, opened in 2011, one year after the launch of Amazon.it. Initially covering 26,000 sqm, it now spans an area of 86,000 sqm to manage growing customer demand and the expansion of the Amazon.it catalog, which now offers more than 136 million products. In November 2015, Amazon opened the urban distribution center in Milan (1500 sqm) to serve Amazon Prime Now customers.
