Sharp controversy over the presence on Amazon of a book, also available in ebook for Kindle version, which is, to say the least, controversial: it is the “Guida per pedofili” (Guide for Pedophiles). Comments received by the Amazon site request the removal of the ebook, which is regularly on sale. Amazon defends itself, but this does not calm tempers.
As soon as the book (and also ebook) “Guida per pedofili” appeared on Amazon, a predictable and sacrosanct controversy flooded the Amazon website itself and many portals, especially in the United States and Canada. The ebook, whose full and original title is Pedophilès Guide to Love and Pleasure: a Child-lover’s Code of Conduct, has outraged thousands of people, many of whom did not wait any longer and formally began to ask Amazon to remove it from its catalog.
Amazon, however, explained that the sale of books and ebooks on the Kindle Store certainly does not aim to encourage crimes, but the company policy is aimed at avoiding any censorship.
A false move for Amazon which will very likely lose a certain segment of customers: those more attentive to ethical issues and the public attitude shown by companies.
Many of these critical consumers are expressing legitimate perplexity: how far is it permissible to go for profit? Certainly, the subject of the guide is highly deplorable, despite the strenuous defense being made by the author Philip R Greaves II.
Many protests are currently circulating via Twitter, a social network that is much more effective in America than in Italy. Until Amazon’s surrender, which, very recently, removed the title from its catalog. How many will forgive the store for this blunder?
