Owners of Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro 3 can contact Microsoft for a power cable replacement.
Microsoft has announced the launch of a recall campaign for customers who purchased a Surface Pro device. Specifically, the Redmond company has acknowledged an issue concerning the power cables of Surface Pro, Surface Pro 2, and Surface Pro 3. According to some reports, the affected batches of faulty cables are believed to pertain to sales in Europe prior to July 2015. As reported by foreign sources, including Channelnomics, the aforementioned Surface Pro power cables may overheat under certain circumstances. This could occur, for instance, if the cables are excessively coiled and left that way for an extended period. The same effect might also occur in case of cable “twists” or if the power cord is crushed. These are clearly not normal circumstances, which is why Microsoft has decided to initiate a special recall campaign. The company specifies, however, that reports of abnormal overheating have been relatively few to date. Nevertheless, it has been decided to investigate carefully, opting to recall European batches sold after mid-July 2015. No negative feedback has been received regarding the power cables of the latest model, the Surface Pro 4.
It should be emphasized, finally, that the highlighted issue does not affect the power adapter itself in any way, but only the external cable. Although the campaign has been officially announced, Microsoft has not yet launched the dedicated page for submitting a request; however, this is expected in a matter of days, if not hours.
