Brand new name but historical and unaltered service: Microsoft announces that SkyDrive will become “OneDrive”.
We’re back to talking about SkyDrive, the storage service offered by Microsoft.
A few months ago – during the month of August – we reported that SkyDrive would soon change its name: Microsoft was indeed forced to make the change due to a legal dispute initiated by the pay-TV provider Sky.
Too much similarity and violation of certain copyright rights, according to Sky, to the point that a British court ordered – in the first instance – the change of the service’s name.
Microsoft decided not to prolong the judicial process, announcing that the company would change the name of SkyDrive in the near future, after an agreement with the other party who – for its part – agreed to wait a few months, the time needed to complete the transition formalities.
Here then, in recent hours, comes news in this regard: Microsoft has launched the new name for the cloud storage service through the release and publication of a video on YouTube.
Goodbye then to SkyDrive and welcome “OneDrive“: this is the new chosen name.
Microsoft emphasizes for clarity that for all users, the change will not entail any variation in usage: the service will remain identical and there will be no particular differences during the transition from one name to the other.
Indeed, there might soon be some new features that will integrate and expand OneDrive services, but nothing will be substantially overturned, thus allowing all users to continue using their available storage space in the usual way.
