New features are arriving for WhatsApp users on devices with the Android operating system. The staff of the increasingly popular instant messaging app announced with the latest update that a truly significant step has been taken towards greater user privacy.
Messages exchanged on WhatsApp will now be encrypted, thanks to the adoption of TextSecure technology, which encrypts messages. In simple terms, this means that the content of conversations can only be read by the sender and recipient, making them messages that cannot be intercepted and decoded (at least not easily) from the outside.
Not even WhatsApp technicians have the “access keys” to the encryption of the various chats exchanged between users.
The new feature has been implemented in the system for some time but is being rolled out now: the company had been working on this front for at least six months.
It remains to be understood when this new feature will also apply to Apple users’ conversations: currently, there is no known date or timeframe by which the update will also apply to devices equipped with iOS.
It is likely that the two operating systems present significant differences, at least concerning the encryption system to be applied to processes activated via WhatsApp.
