Sony presents two tablets with Android 3.0 Honeycomb: the upcoming Sony S1 and Sony S2, featuring designs quite different from competing devices already on the market. Here are the main features revealed so far and a presentation video of the Sony tablets.
Sony is ready to enter the tablet sector, a market that – along with smartphones – seems to be bringing a certain liveliness to the mobile tech industry.
The official announcement of the release of two Sony tablets came just a few hours ago. Both are equipped with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, but the selling price is not yet known.
Sony S1 is – aesthetically speaking – a classic tablet: its form factor doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, although the back features a design reminiscent of a book or newspaper cover folded upon itself.
Very light, it has a 9.4″ display and, regarding connectivity, it’s Wi-Fi and compatible with 3G (Umts/Hspa), and possibly 4G. Sony S1 is the tablet designed for mobile web browsing but, above all, to ensure an enjoyable gaming experience anywhere, thanks to a lightweight device and a generously sized screen.
Very different and quite innovative, at least in its form, is the Sony S2 tablet: this device can be folded in half like a book, resembling a soft, rounded clutch. When open, it reveals two 5.5″ screens that can be used in unison or separately, allowing for control of multiple functions.
The S2 also features Wi-Fi and 3G and, like its bigger sibling, is designed for multimedia experiences.
Both Sony tablets will allow direct connection to Qriocity and probably also to PlayStation Network, which has been blocked for several days due to security issues.
Returning to the two upcoming Sony tablets, users will be able to download ebooks directly to their tablets via the Reader Store service.
More details about the new Sony S1 and S2 tablets will be revealed soon: not only has the selling price not been disclosed, but the official release date has not yet been announced.
