The system architecture of the newAlpha 7S III has been completely redesigned to deliver exceptional video and photographic performance. The new 12.1 MP (approx., effective) back-illuminated 35mm full-frame Exmor R CMOS image sensor reduces rolling shutter effect by up to three times and utilizes advanced light-gathering techniques to ensure high sensitivity with low noise, allowing for shooting in low-light conditions without the need for extensive lighting setups. In addition to improved image quality, the new sensor features, for the first time in an S-series camera, a focal-plane phase-detection autofocus system. Complementing the new sensor, theAlpha 7S III also integrates a new BIONZ XR image processor, which provides up to eight times the processing power, minimizes processing latency, and offers many of the features that distinguish the series. The new system also boasts the world’s brightest and largest 9.44 million-dot OLED electronic viewfinder. The camera is also the world’s first to feature dual CFexpress Type A card slots for high-speed data transfer while maintaining a compact size.

Professional Video Production

Alpha 7S III integrates 4K video recording up to 120 frames per second, 10-bit depth, and 4:2:2 color sampling to ensure spectacular video quality. Post-production workflow is more flexible and efficient, with a variety of advanced recording modes such as All-Intra encoding[xiii] and MPEG-H HEVC/H.265 (XAVC HS).Alpha 7S III simplifies the integration of video footage shot with other professional cameras by providing three color profile settings: S-Gamut, S-Gamut3, and S-Gamut3.Cine. With these settings, footage shot with theAlpha 7S III can be easily combined with images shot on professional cameras, thus simplifying multi-camera post-production workflows. In addition to S-Log3 gamma curves, theAlpha 7S III supports an HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) image profile, which requires minimal post-production intervention. TheAlpha 7S III also allows for 16-bit RAW output up to 4K 60p to an external recorder via a Type-A HDMI connector, further enhancing post-production flexibility.

Improved Image Quality

The new CMOS image sensor and BIONZ XR™ processor in theAlpha 7S III deliver the legendary sensitivity of the S series with significantly optimized color reproduction and texture rendering for overall improved image quality. The base ISO has been lowered to 80, for a normal range of 80-102,400 (expandable to 80-409,600 for video and 40-409,600 for stills), offering more flexible sensitivity and wide dynamic range with low noise levels at all settings. Image quality is improved with approximately 1 stopiv noise reduction in the mid-to-high range.

Colors and textures of foliage, skin tones, and other details are reproduced more realistically and uniformly, regardless of the light source. Gradation rendering has also been refined to better reproduce skin tones and highlight roll-off in portraits. Improvements have also been made to automatic white balance: a new “visible light + IR sensor” helps ensure more accurate white balance under artificial lighting conditions, even with fluorescent and LED lights.

Advanced AF Performance for Hybrid Applications

For the first time in an Alpha 7S series camera, theAlpha 7S III integrates the Fast Hybrid AF system. By combining phase-detection and contrast-detection autofocus, the camera can track subjects across a wide frame with exceptional speed, accuracy, and smoothness, even when using a shallow depth of field. Focus accuracy is guaranteed with Sony’s E-mount lenses.

For shots with moving subjects, Real-time Tracking and Real-time Eye AF functions ensure stable and constant focus on the desired subject. Sony’s advanced Real-time Eye AF function improves detection performance by 30% compared to the previous system,[iii] thanks to the new image processor. Detection is always accurate and reliable, even when the subject looks away from the lens. Real-time Tracking is activated simply by touching the subject on the screen. Real-time Eye AF, on the other hand, engages automatically when an eye is detected.

Flexible Autofocus Settings for Video Shooting

Building on comprehensive customer feedback, the camera has been equipped with various AF functions for professionals, including seven AF transition speed settings, for seamless focus pulls, and five AF subject sensitivity settings, allowing you to customize how easily the autofocus stays on a subject or switches to others. Touch Tracking enables not only real-time tracking but also composition and capture while using a gimbal or in single-operator situations. Touch Focus can now be used in manual focus mode on the LCD screen or remotely via the Imaging Edge Mobile app[xvii].

New heat dissipation structure

The design of Alpha 7S III has been updated to ensure effective heat dissipation and minimize overheating, even during extended recording sessions of 4K 60p 4:2:2 10-bit video for an hour or moreviii. A unique, newly developed structure disperses heat to keep sensor and processor temperatures within normal operating ranges, preventing overheating and maintaining the compact body size. The new heat dissipation structure does not require fans or vents, so the Alpha 7S III’s dust and moisture resistance[xviii] remains guaranteed.

Video assistance functions

For moving videos, Alpha 7S III is the first camera in the Alpha series to offer “Active” modeix with built-in 5-axis optical image stabilization, for particularly challenging shooting conditions. It is also the first Alpha E-mount body to feature a side-opening, vari-angle rear screen, perfect for gimbal shots, difficult angles, handheld use, and many other applications. The screen rotates sideways, up and down, and has a 3-inch touchscreen LCD monitor with approximately 1.44 million dots, ensuring optimal visibility even in bright sunlight.

Alpha 7S III also offers 10 preset Creative Looks that can be used as-is or customized for both photos and videos, making it easy to create evocative atmospheres directly from the camera.

A digital audio interface has been added to the camera’s Multi Interface (MI) Shoe, enabling clearer audio recording with a compatible external microphone from Sony. When used with Sony’s XLR-K3M XLR adapter kit, Alpha 7S III offers the ability to record 4-channel 24-bit digital audio, another first for the Alpha series. Like other MI Shoe accessories, no cables or batteries are required, which could limit creative freedom.

Additional video assistance features include a new monitor display, now featuring a prominent red recording frame to clearly indicate when recording is in progress (even when mounted on a rig or gimbal), custom zoom settings, adjustable white balance during recording, display rotation, interval shooting, frame grabs from video, and more.

Impeccable quality photos

Alpha 7S III is equipped with a Fast Hybrid AF system with 759 phase-detection AF points, covering 92% of the image sensor. High AF accuracy is always ensured, for precise and reliable focusing down to EV-6xix brightness, a condition where subjects are difficult to see clearly even with the naked eye. Continuous shooting allows for over 1,000 uncompressed RAW imagesxxi at up to 10 fps, or up to 8 fps in live view mode, using either the mechanical or electronic shutter.

Alpha 7S III features another world-first^x: a 0.64-inch Quad-XGA electronic viewfinder with approximately 9.44 million dots, featuring a high-definition OLED display. The viewfinder of Alpha 7S III offers a 0.90x magnification[xx], a 41° diagonal field of view, and a 25mm eye relief for sharp, corner-to-corner vision. It is also dustproof, fog-resistant, and moisture-resistant, highly responsive, and boasts switchable modes for different subject types. Every aspect of the viewfinder of Alpha 7S III has been designed and refined for a professional workflow.

For the first time in a Sony digital camera, Alpha 7S III offers the High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF): in addition to enabling smooth 10-bit gradations, the format incorporates advanced compression technology, significantly reducing file size and saving storage space while maintaining image quality. HEIF photos can be played back on a compatible Sony HDR (HLG) TV via a direct Type-A HDMI connection from Alpha 7S III, for an extraordinarily realistic dynamic range[xxi].

Versatile design created for professionals

CFexpress Type A for high-speed data transfer

Another world first, Alpha 7S III features two slots compatible with CFexpress Type A media, as well as UHS-I and UHS-II SDXC/SDHC cards. This dual slot translates into high read/write speed without sacrificing the compact body size. CFexpress Type A cards, ideal for high-speed continuous shooting of RAW photos and recording of 4K 120p video at high bit rates[xxii], offer maximum write speed and allow the camera buffers, which generate large amounts of data for photos and videos, to be cleared quickly. High-speed data transfer to a PC is approximately 1.7 times faster[xxiii] than that of an SD card. The dual slot can be set to relay mode to allow extended continuous recording, even of data at maximum bit rate, as well as simultaneous and separate recording depending on the format type.

Optimized menu with advanced touch screen

Alpha 7S III also features an optimized menu structure for easier navigation, and a highly responsive touch menu function for faster and more intuitive control. For those who shoot both photos and videos, it is now possible to store separate settings for the two modes and switch between them quickly.

The redesigned grip of Alpha 7S III ensures greater comfort and a secure grip, while the optimized dust removal function and dust and moisture sealing guarantee reliability, even in the harshest environments. The camera is equipped with a robust and reliable Type A HDMI connector. Furthermore, for the first time in the Alpha series, USB PD (Power Delivery) support boosts power from an external source to allow extended recording with minimal battery consumption.

Advanced connectivity for professional work environments

Alpha 7S III has been designed and configured to meet the needs of photojournalists, videographers, and sports photographers who have tight deadlines and thus require various practical and advanced connectivity options. The camera supports 5 GHz[xxiv]/2.4 GHz wireless LAN connectivity (IEEE 802.11ac) and features the MIMO multiple input/output system, which improves communication quality through the use of multiple antennas, doubling the speed compared to Alpha 7R IV. It also supports tethering[xxv] via USB, and when connected by USB cable to a 5G (5th generation cellular network standard) compatible device, such as Sony’s “Xperia 1 II” smartphone, it allows the use of the 5G network for faster and more stable FTP file transfer. High-speed wired USB to LAN connection[xxvii] also provides stable and fast FTP transfer for both videos and photos. The included USB Type-C connector supports SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps (USB 3.2) data transfer for high-speed data transfer to a PC (with tethering) and to facilitate the management of large image files.
