Samsung: Round and SIM-enabled smartphone under study

Samsung could launch a SIM-enabled smartwatch, thus independent from the smartphone. The innovations would also concern the design, this time round.

Anticipations regarding Samsung‘s upcoming projects are emerging.
Specifically, information is leaking about the next release of new smartwatches which, evolving from those presented so far, could feature new and more interesting functionalities.
Apparently, Samsung is preparing a smartwatch equipped with a slot for inserting a SIM card.
This would open up entirely different scenarios, as the new wearable device would be able to function without being necessarily “paired” with a smartphone.
An independent device, capable of accessing the network primarily, without the intermediation of another main device; all of this would be possible also by leveraging an ad hoc operating system, namely Tizen.
Alongside this anticipation, launched by the “Wall Street Journal,” comes a second one concerning the aspect of the potential new Samsung smartwatch: it is learned that the company has filed a patent for a wearable device with a round screen and a camera, in addition to a heart rate monitor and GPS.
The patent would also include unique functionalities activated via the strap, so it will be important to position the smartwatch on the wrist in a certain way to fully exploit all the usage possibilities of this advanced watch.

In short, based on the design of the smartwatch patented by Samsung that is circulating these hours, the model would resemble the Moto 360 quite closely.
However, it is noted that the aforementioned patent was filed before the release of Motorola’s smartwatch.
At the moment, it is not possible to know if and when this wearable device will be produced: it is not the first time a company has filed a patent but has not proceeded with any output strictly linked to it.
Furthermore, it is unclear whether this particular device with a round screen is the same smartwatch equipped with a SIM card slot: the models, in fact, could be two different ones.
