Firefox OS: end of development for smartphone operating system

Mozilla has officially announced the end of further development of Firefox OS for smartphones: here are the reasons.

Official and confirmed news, arriving from Mozilla circles. The Firefox OS development project has come to an end.
The staff working on the Mozilla-branded smartphone operating system has indeed decreed – irrevocably, it seems – the end of any other activity connected to the red fox’s operating system.
The reason is quite simple, at times quite disarming for how honestly it was announced: there is too much strong competition.
Not only that: Firefox OS failed to capture attention, not knowing how to become a real alternative to the operating systems that dominate the mobile sector.
In short, Firefox OS has not even minimally scratched the market segments opened and consolidated by Apple with iOS, by Google with Android, and by Microsoft with Windows Phone.
There’s no contest and therefore it is quite unproductive – and perhaps also uninteresting – in the current state to continue working on Firefox OS.
However, it is not yet time to say goodbye to this operating system entirely: although unable to compete with the other players in this sector, it remains an excellent fertile ground on which to continue working, albeit in a different context.
In fact, Mozilla still believes in the project, although no longer focused on smartphones and tablets: the focus, rather, is on developing useful functionalities for the so-called “Internet of Things”, a sector with strong future expansion.

It seems that in this regard, Mozilla technicians see a prosperous future on which to develop ideas and potential, opened by the Firefox OS base.
So, while a future is still being hypothesized, the present is therefore marked by a stop to the smartphone operating system, with the natural consequence that no other devices running on Firefox OS will be launched in the near future.

UPDATE: after receiving a report via Twitter from Daniele Scasciafratte (@Mte90Net), it is brought to our readers’ attention that the Italian community has highlighted that the issue may have been raised by a different interpretation of a tweet posted by Ari Jaaksi in this regard.
A second tweet explains, in fact, that Mozilla has actually stopped offering Firefox OS phones through carriers, i.e., telephone carriers.
At present, given the lack of clarity on the matter, further communications, which are more exhaustive and no longer cryptic, are awaited and hoped for from official Mozilla channels.
