RapidShare closes at the end of March: what are the reasons?

Official news just hours ago: the file hosting service RapidShare will close soon. What is happening?

Today, in the world of the web and particularly file hosting, everyone is talking about RapidShare.
The reason is simple: one of the most popular services in this specific sector, RapidShare, is about to close.
This is not a rumor nor news leaked from anonymous sources, but an official company decision.
The final date of operation has been set for March 31, 2015, and from the following day all registered accounts will be deleted.
The same fate, of course, will also befall the content that has been uploaded to the platform.
Therefore, in order to avoid losing important data, it is advisable to proceed with saving everything that was previously secured on the file hosting platform.
Beyond mere technical and organizational issues, one wonders about the reason for RapidShare’s closure, given that the official communication – visible on the service’s homepage – does not specify any reason.
The Swiss company has therefore not explained any problems that have emerged in recent months, but the most widespread hypothesis is that RapidShare probably could not withstand the blows from its fiercest competitors.
There are many other cloud storage services that, with a more aggressive policy, have offered cheaper alternatives for the secure saving of multimedia and various types of content.
In past years, the company’s management always managed to find solutions to make the platform more secure, but especially to limit acts of explicit cyber piracy, by avoiding providing an internal search engine or eliminating reported illicit content, to give just two examples.

This often helped RapidShare avoid more serious legal problems, which, however, continued for a long time to be involved in court precisely for accusations of facilitating the exchange of files containing copyrighted material. The same fate as many other services of this kind, it is worth remembering.
This too could be a valid reason for deciding to cease all operations, before incurring lawsuits that are much more complex and burdensome than those already faced.
As mentioned, we are only moving in the realm of hypotheses, and very probably, since an official communication has already been released, it is unlikely that we will learn more.
