Project Loon: Google brings internet with balloons

Google presents “Project Loon”, a method for bringing internet connectivity to remote locations using balloons.

Google has announced an ambitious and highly interesting project.
It involves the possibility of concretely structuring a system to bring internet connectivity even to areas not reached by the necessary infrastructure.
This project, officially presented by Google and summarized in the two videos at the end of this article, is called “Project Loon“.
Bringing connectivity to impoverished areas of the world or regions characterized by natural elements that hinder the construction of connectivity networks – such as large mountain ranges, jungles, or archipelagos – can be made possible through an alternative method.
Google is indeed developing a system of balloons capable of delivering a signal to the territories below when the balloons are in flight.
The plan is to build rings of balloons that will ascend to an altitude double that of commercial aircraft.

The balloons will thus drift around the earth, propelled by stratospheric winds, covering various territories and providing access to internet connectivity, with speeds roughly comparable to 3G networks.
Naturally, there is still much work to be done to refine the project, especially because it is difficult to direct the balloons precisely to where the signal needs to be sent.
On the other hand, fixed high-altitude stations would incur excessively high costs, making the “flying” solution potentially the right answer to the demand for connectivity even in remote and unserved rural areas.
Here are two videos related to Google’s Project Loon.
