Photojournalism becomes street art: Canon and Reuters together in the streets of Milan

Canon and the international photographic agency Reuters are joining forces to create street art exhibitions across Europe, telling the unique stories of each country through the typical language of photojournalism: from Berlin’s famous nightlife to Paris’s controversial banlieues, and even the beautiful, nearly abandoned villages of Abruzzo. Each of these open-air exhibitions highlights significant social aspects and current issues.

Seven European cities were involved in hosting the photographic exhibitions that Canon produced in collaboration with Reuters’ The Wider Image: Cologne, London, Paris, Madrid, Amsterdam, Stockholm, and indeed Milan. In the streets of the NoLo district, in the Loreto-north area of Milan, the photographs of Siegfried Modola“wide” (giant) format were used to create creative installations that tell the story of resilience – as Modola himself defines it – of the last inhabitants of a suggestive Italian village, Santo Stefano di Sessanio in the province of L’Aquila and inhabited by just 108 people.

The phenomenon of emigration in Italy, from the post-war period to today, is estimated to have left around 6,000 abandoned villages. Every year, more and more young people leave rural areas and villages to move to big cities, mainly in search of work, causing the most isolated villages to empty and giving way to decay. Modola thus wanted to tell the particular atmospheres and social implications he discovered during his visit to the village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio. In this unique place, thanks to the intervention of Swedish millionaire Daniel Kihlgren, private homes in the village have been opened to tourists, giving life to a “Albergo Diffuso” (Scattered Hotel) project aimed at enhancing the territory to give new impetus and development opportunities to this corner of Abruzzo. A small ancient world, extremely picturesque, which is told through the eyes of the professional photojournalist and comes to life with all the colors and expressive power of Modola’s images through the street art installations on display in Milan.

The Reuters photojournalists involved in this project used the new EOS 5D mark IV cameras to capture these iconic images that represent an all-Italian reality. Canon has chosen to stand alongside professionals who, through photography, wish to tell the truths of our time and, as in this case, the Italian excellences #IOX.
