Live video streaming on Twitter for your followers: Periscope is here.
A few days ago, we discussed the Meerkat app, designed for sharing live streaming videos with social contacts.
Launched only a few weeks ago, this new application quickly captured the attention not only of users – or potential users – but especially of Twitter executives, as Meerkat relies on the microblogging platform to function.
However, there is no formal agreement between Meerkat’s developers and Twitter. Consequently, the social network’s staff decided to restrict certain functionalities within the app, particularly as they were preparing to launch their own proprietary application, a direct competitor to Meerkat.
As anticipated a few days ago, it is called Periscope. This app offers video streaming and sharing of multimedia content directly through Twitter.
The interface is clean and minimalist, allowing users to start streaming in seconds. As soon as a live video begins, all followers receive a notification, enabling them to tune in without the need for individual requests.
Users can also choose to make the stream private, accessible to just one contact or a limited group. Furthermore, Periscope allows anyone to watch the stream, even those who haven’t downloaded the app: the only requirement is having a Twitter account.
Another potentially useful feature is the availability of the video for 24 hours after the live broadcast ends. This allows those who cannot connect to Twitter promptly to still view their contacts’ multimedia content.
Currently, Periscope is exclusively available on the App Store, meaning it’s only for iOS devices. There is no launch date yet for the Android platform, but its debut on devices running this operating system is expected soon.
