Online viruses: more on religious sites than porn sites

According to the latest findings by Symantec, religious sites are more infected with online viruses than porn sites. Furthermore, Italy has the worst record for the number of bots present on PCs.

In terms of IT security, no online site can feel safe from cybercriminal attacks. If this is true, it is equally true that no user can consider themselves completely safe, not even when browsing apparently clean and harmless sites.
Symantec, distributing the results of its “Security Threat Report Volume 17“, has highlighted that there are more threats on religious sites than on porn sites.
The report is alarming and disturbing: while an average of 25 threats were found on porn sites in Italy, the number rises significantly on religious portals, reaching 115 recognized threats.
Therefore, although porn sites are far more numerous than religious sites, the latter would be more dangerous, at least potentially.
Other data also emerge from the same report: Italy is home to bots or, to be more precise, Rome ranks first for bots, considering the entire EMEA region, i.e., all of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
As for the global scenario referring to the same evaluation parameter, Italy is fourth, preceded only by the United States, Taiwan, and Brazil.

Definitely a record not to be proud of: many attacks on IT security of large companies, but also of small businesses, originate from here.
Huge numbers also regarding the sending of spam emails: 4% of such phishing or spam content originates from Italy alone.
A decidedly alarming global situation, as Symantec reports that in 2011 alone, over 5.5 billion IT security attacks were blocked, with an average increase of 81% compared to the previous year.
The only possible advice is to arm yourself with a good antivirus, free or paid.
