April 25th has been chosen for the historic brand change. The Finnish company, undisputed leader in mobile phones until a few years ago, loses its name in favor of Microsoft Mobile.
Everything has a beginning. But also an end. After years of undisputed dominance in the mobile phone sector, the Nokia brand disappears. Following the acquisition by Microsoft, it is precisely the Nokia brand that is sacrificed in favor of a more obvious brand that partly takes the name of Bill Gates‘s corporation: Microsoft Mobile Oy.
The handover has been set for April 25th, but the mobile device brand is already known. It will be the Scandinavian Nokia plant itself that will handle Lumia, in addition to retaining the brand only for the network and maps sector.
The change of hands, however, is not just a story of finance that recorded considerable figures such as 5.44 billion euros (this is the amount spent by Microsoft to acquire the Finnish company). It is a significant change that marks a radical shift and a hope for relaunch. Microsoft has every interest in carving out a substantial slice of the mobile market, which today more than ever is the real objective of digital corporations.
On the other hand, there are giants like Apple and Samsung that, when Nokia had no rivals in the mobile phone world, were dealing with a niche market or little more. Historical cycles, to say it like Giambattista Vico. After all, who would have ever thought, just a couple of decades ago, that Bill Gates would take a backseat with his creation Microsoft compared to the bitten apple?
History therefore teaches us that it is difficult to make medium-term predictions in a competitive sector like technology. After all, how many people currently think that Microsoft Mobile (formerly Nokia) can really bother Apple, Samsung, and Google with its Android?
