How to format text in WhatsApp

With WhatsApp it is possible to send formatted texts in bold or italics. To write text in bold, simply type an asterisk before and after the word.

For italics, however, you need to use the underscore.

Bold

*FullPress* will become FullPress

Italics

_FullPress_ will become FullPress

But that’s not all. There are other text formatting possibilities in WhatsApp.

Strikethrough

To change the text format to strikethrough, insert a tilde on both sides of the text:

~text~

Monospace

To change the text format to monospace, insert three backticks on both sides of the text:

```text```

Simple, right?

But it doesn’t end there. An even faster way is to highlight the word and follow the menu that appears, including the one hidden behind the three vertical dots on the right.

Android: tap and hold the text you are writing in the appropriate field, then select Bold, Italic, or More. Tap More to choose between Strikethrough or Monospace

iPhone: tap the text you are writing in the appropriate field > Select or Select all > B_I_U. Then choose between Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, or Monospace

After the introduction of this feature, many were ready to swear it was a first step towards the world of emails.

The new feature we are discussing here is indeed very close to emails, although obviously not sufficient. However, we are willing to bet that the introduction of formatted text, even if only for italics and bold, is not something left to chance by the Facebook group’s corporate. The project is unlikely to be abandoned, especially since the test will almost certainly lead to the achievement of expectations.
