Google shuts down Waves, Gears, Bookmarks Lists, and other services

Google is once again cutting some of its services: Waves, Gears, Bookmarks Lists, and others are gone.

Google continues its cleanup of services, and this time the axe will fall on seven products that, over time, have not grown as expected and have not garnered the favor of loyal Google users. Goodbye then to:

  • Google Waves
  • Friend Connect
  • Bookmarks Lists
  • Gears
  • Search Timeline
  • Knol
  • Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal (RE).

The decision was made, just as it happened with what has been dubbed Google’s “spring cleaning,” to rationalize resources and services, in order to focus more on areas where it has decided to invest more heavily, primarily Google+ and Chrome, a browser that is gaining widespread adoption among internet users. More than twenty projects have been abandoned or integrated into existing applications by Google, without further development. Google Wave will become read-only starting January 31, 2012, but will be completely shut down on April 30. Even sooner, Bookmarks Lists will disappear on December 19, 2011. Following that, by the end of the year, goodbye to Gears, Friend Connect (visible only to those with a Blogger profile), and all others in rapid succession. One of the clearly expressed intentions by the Google staff is to encourage users to sign up for Google+, as within the social network, it is possible to use similar functions without needing to resort to individual services. It truly seems that the path taken by Google is one of consolidation, favoring increasingly comprehensive yet simultaneously leaner and more “compact” services.
