Relations between Google and China are cooling down again, following the local government’s refusal to renew the license necessary for operating in the country. At present, Google is blocked in China for searches, but not for mail, news, and images.

Google is therefore partially blocked: despite having stopped automatically redirecting users to Google Hong Kong – to avoid Chinese censorship – the Chinese government has remained literally silent. No official statement, let alone a press release, has been issued; it is unknown what the decisions of the competent Ministry are, and according to news from the Financial Times, the changes made by Google in recent days have not impressed China. The annual renewal has not been granted to the Mountain View giant, therefore searches continue to be blocked but mail, news, and images function regularly (indeed, they are “completely or mostly accessible“, as stated by Google). A link for manual redirection (no longer automatic) to Hong Kong servers has also appeared, but Google is also not commenting much on the communication front. It is a genuine tug-of-war conducted in silence.
