The tweet that initiated the flood of rumors surrounding this potential social network is no longer traceable, having been promptly removed. However, the profile that originated it does not belong to a novice: it is Kevin Rose, founder of Digg. Therefore, it’s an authoritative voice, even if not directly connected to Google’s inner workings.
The whisper materialized into the revelation that Google is reportedly on the verge of launching “a service competing with Facebook“. Adam D’Angelo, formerly of Facebook and now head of Quora, echoes this, confirming the veracity of Google Me, a real project on which several people are indeed working.
It’s evident to everyone that, despite the new social features in Gmail with the launch of Buzz, Google lacks a true Facebook counterpart, something global and complete that can span all social domains.
Statistics show that an ever-increasing number of users first visit Facebook and then navigate the rest of the web, often starting from links shared on Facebook. This means that much information discoverable through Google searches today is available through friends on the social network. This observation likely fuels Google’s urgency to counter the social media army – and Facebook in particular – with the Google Me project, though a probable launch date is still unknown.
