Today’s Google Doodle is dedicated to Charles Dickens, the British writer. The occasion is the bicentennial of his birth (born February 7, 1812), the writer many will remember for The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Hard Times, and A Christmas Carol.
A famous and popular writer, Dickens was one of the pioneers of the social novel, which recounts impoverished social conditions. The Doodle depicts some characters brought to success by the British writer, who also inspired some Disney feature films.
Dickens was not only a successful writer but also a journalist and travel chronicler, preferring this profession to that of a lawyer, which he had been steered towards.
For those unfamiliar with Google Doodles, they are illustrated logos that replace the search engine’s official logo each day. Almost every day, Google celebrates famous people to reposition them in memory and make them remembered by young and old alike.  Â
