The combination of a robust and durable body with superior image quality and ease of use. FUJIFILM X-H1 is the first X Series camera to include a 5-axis image stabilization system (IBIS) with up to 5.5 stops and the new “Eterna” Film Simulation for outstanding video reproduction. 

FUJIFILM X-H1 is the camera with the highest performance in the X Series range of mirrorless cameras, known for its superior image quality created using FUJIFILM’s proprietary color reproduction technology. With a newly designed robust and durable body, this latest model incorporates a range of extremely useful functions that support shooting in various situations required by professional photographers and videographers.

X-H1 is the first X Series camera to include the latest 5-axis in-body image stabilization (IBIS) system with up to 5.5 stops and a flicker reduction mode that improves the quality of indoor sports photography.

X-H1 allows the use of 5-axis image stabilization with a maximum of 5 stops with the current range of FUJINON XF, with the exception of some lenses. Furthermore, the camera will be compatible with other lenses available on the market by 2018, namely the professional cinema lenses MKX18-55mmT2.9 e MKX50-135mmT2.9, equipped with an X Mount (scheduled for release from June 2018), the lens XF200mmF2 R LM OIS WR, a bright prime telephoto lens, and XF8-16mmF2.8 R WR, designed to meet the needs of panoramic and landscape shooting (by the end of 2018). These new additions will offer exceptional image quality results and will be ideal for sports photography. 

Key Features

In-body image stabilization (IBIS) up to 5.5 stops

The first built-in image stabilization system (IBIS) within an X Series camera uses three axial accelerometers, three axial gyroscope sensors, and a specially developed dual processor. Combining all of this, the camera achieves a high speed of approximately 10,000 calculations per second, which, along with the compensation mechanisms, ensures uncompromising image quality and accuracy, with the performance described below.

These technical innovations have been developed to support high-precision performance:

  • A laser measurement device is used during the production process of the image stabilization unit, controlling the flatness and position of components with twice the precision of standard components.
  • The assembly process also includes the inspection and adjustment of each individual camera to ensure that, even when image stabilization is used, the parallel position of the sensor is achieved with micron-level precision, as in previous models.
  • A new spring mechanism has also been included to reduce micro-vibrations caused by the operation of the mechanical shutter.
  • The photographer can also choose to use the electronic first-curtain shutter or the electronic shutter, virtually eliminating the effect of vibrations to maximize the benefits of image stabilization.

X-H1 features the APS-C X-Trans™ CMOS III sensor (24.30 megapixels, without low-pass filter) and the high-speed image processing engine X-Processor Pro. This proprietary FUJIFILM technology was first implemented in the X-Pro2 and X-T2 cameras, receiving numerous global awards. The combination of high-quality FUJINON lenses and FUJIFILM’s exclusive color reproduction technology, developed over more than 8 decades, makes the X-H1 capable of delivering exceptional image quality, reproducing the finest details of the subject, enhancing texture, three-dimensional structure, and conveying the atmosphere of the scene.

Extremely robust body, high-performance viewfinder, and improved operability.

In addition to ensuring dust and water resistance and the ability to operate at temperatures down to -10°C, the camera uses a magnesium alloy that is 25% more robust than the X-T2. FUJIFILM has also modified the structure where the lens mount flange is attached, achieving a compact and lightweight body that maintains high precision, strong resistance to shocks, twists, and other potential deformations.

The increase in particle size on the outer surface of the camera provides a high-quality scratch-resistant coating with a surface hardness equivalent to 8H.

The electronic viewfinder offers high magnification and extreme precision. The magnification ratio of 0.75x and a resolution of 3.69 million pixels make it a leader among mirrorless cameras. The viewfinder display is exceptionally fluid, with a display lag of just 0.005 seconds and a refresh rate of 100 frames per second, giving the photographer immediate confirmation of subject movement and focus position with great accuracy.

The rear monitor is a 3-inch electrostatic FUJIFILM X-H1 has a significant improvement in operability, with a total of 19 changes, based on feedback from professional photographers:

  • The camera features an accurate design for a stable grip and easy operation of the shutter button to ensure immediate action. It features a newly shaped, wide grip and uses a leaf spring switch for the shutter button.
  • The X-H1 has the quietest shutter sound compared to all X Series cameras, making it an ideal tool for environments where discretion is required.
  • A new AF-ON button has been added to the rear of the camera. This simplifies autofocus operation with the thumb, allowing the photographer to use just one finger to operate the shutter button. Other changes have been made to improve operability, including an increased size for the rear buttons and improvements to the grip on the front and rear command dials.
  • The X-H1 also features a focus lever that facilitates fast and precise movement to the desired focus point.

Wide range of video features to support film production

The X-H1 is the first X Series camera to include “ETERNA”, a new film simulation ideal for video shooting. This mode simulates cinematic film, creating subdued colors and rich shadow tones, considerably enhancing creative freedom during post-production. The camera’s video image quality has been improved by its new ability to record at a high bitrate of 200 Mbps. The camera boasts a total of 20 functional and performance improvements including 1080/120P high-speed video mode (for 1/2, 1/4 and 1/5 speed slow motion) for spectacular footage, F-log recording on an SD card to facilitate workflow, DCI 4K (4096×2160) shooting mode, a 400% dynamic range setting (approx. 12 stops), a high recording bitrate of 200 Mbps, a high-quality internal microphone (24-bit/48kHz), and time code.

Flicker Reduction Mode and Updated AF Algorithms

Flicker reduction mode is crucial for indoor sports photography, and the X-H1 achieves this with its mirrorless system, enabling stable exposure during burst shooting even under fluorescent and mercury lighting.

The AF algorithm update improves the following performance:

  • The minimum light limit for phase-detection autofocus has been improved by approximately 1.5 stops from 0.5 EV to -1.0 EV, increasing autofocus accuracy and speed in low-light environments.
  • The minimum aperture usable for phase detection has been changed from F8 to F11; even when using the XF100-400mmF4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR with the XF2X TC WR teleconverter, phase-detection autofocus can now be used.
  • Major improvements have been made to AF-C performance during zoom operation, which offers significant benefits during sports photography and in situations where subjects move unpredictably.
  • Subjects that are difficult for phase-detection autofocus, such as finely textured surfaces like bird plumage and wildlife fur, can now be captured at high speed and with high accuracy.

Optional Accessories 

Vertical Battery Grip VPB-XH1

  • It is dust and water-resistant and operates at temperatures down to -10°C. Two batteries can be loaded, with a third battery in the camera body increasing the maximum number of shots available in normal mode to approximately 900. In boost mode, multiple batteries can be used simultaneously, improving burst shooting performance by reducing the interval between consecutive shots, shutter release time lag, and blackout period. The accessory also increases the maximum shooting time for 4K video to approximately 30 minutes, making the VPB-XH1 an essential accessory for maximizing the X-H1’s performance.
  • The VPB-XH1 comes equipped with a headphone jack, allowing the operator to monitor audio during video recording.
  • The grip also includes charging capability. The supplied AC adapter (AC-9VS) can be used to charge two batteries simultaneously in approximately 2 hours.

Wide-Angle Eyecup EC-XH-W (*X Series and GFX)

The eyecup covers a wide area around the eye, significantly reducing light interference and increasing focus during long shooting sessions.

The eyecup can also be rotated in 90° increments, making it adaptable to both eyes and for shooting in vertical and horizontal positions. The eyecup features an anti-static coating, which reduces dust adhesion.

The X-H1 will be available from March 2018 at an RRP of €1,939.99 (inc. VAT) for the body only, and at an RRP of €2,239.99 (inc. VAT) for the kit including the Vertical Power Booster.
