FUJIFILM today announces the second medium format digital mirrorless camera, the FUJIFILM GFX 50R, which boasts a 51.4 MP medium format sensor in a body that, compact and lightweight, is reminiscent of the renowned medium format film cameras, long considered the best choice in documentary and street photography.
FUJIFILM GFX 50R embodies the philosophy of Fujifilm’s GFX mirrorless medium format system, which aims to offer compact and lightweight bodies combined with high performance.
This new model expands the capabilities of the GFX system and makes medium format even more accessible. GFX 50R offers unparalleled image quality, combining an extraordinary resolution of 51.4 megapixels with unique tones, superior color reproduction, and high-performance lenses. Furthermore, it renders images that faithfully reproduce the texture of the subject, the three-dimensional feel, and even the atmosphere of each scene.
The robust magnesium alloy body is sealed in 64 points to ensure resistance to dust and weather and the ability to be used at temperatures down to -10 °C. The GFX 50R features a rangefinder-style design, weighs approximately 775g (145g lighter than the GFX 50S), and has a thickness of only 66.4mm, making it 25mm slimmer than the GFX 50S. These are aspects highly sought after by photographers.
FUJIFILM GFX 50R is on sale at the indicative retail price of 4,575 euros including VAT.
Compact and lightweight medium format digital camera in a rangefinder-style design
The GFX 50R features a lightweight body, weighing approximately 775g*2 (145g lighter than the GFX 50S) and is very compact, with a thickness of only 66.4mm, making it 25mm slimmer than the GFX 50S.
The rangefinder-style design allows you to directly observe the photo’s subject, while with the other eye you look through the viewfinder. This allows you to control and perceive the real atmosphere of the scene around the subject shown in the EVF.
The GFX 50R is equipped with a 0.77x 3.69M dot “organic EL” electronic viewfinder (EVF). This allows for accurate focusing despite the large size of the medium format sensor, which has a shallower depth of field than a 35mm full-frame sensor when shooting at the same field of view.
51.4MP Medium Format CMOS Sensor and X-Processor Pro
The medium format “G Format” sensor (43.8mm x 32.9mm) has a better light reception capacity per pixel compared to a 35mm full-frame sensor at the same resolution. Furthermore, the microlenses have been designed to optimize light acquisition and image resolution, and the data flow management from photodetectors has been customized to achieve a superior level of image quality, surpassing that of existing cameras using a sensor of the same size. As a result, the GFX 50R delivers images that faithfully reproduce the subject’s texture, the three-dimensional feel, and even the atmosphere of each scene.
The GFX 50R is equipped with the X-Processor Pro image processing engine. The camera supports FUJIFILM’s renowned Film Simulation modes to select the classic film tones like Velvia, PROVIA, and ACROS, used for many years in medium format film cameras by professional photographers and enthusiasts.
Intuitive Handling and Robust Body
The GFX 50R features a Focus Lever for quick adjustment of the focus point. The elimination of selection buttons provides additional space for a better grip on the camera. The top panel features two dials, one for shutter speed and the other for exposure compensation. The milled aluminum dials, with their satisfying “click” resistance, convey a sense of quality and incredible ergonomics.
The robust magnesium alloy body is sealed in 64 points to ensure resistance to dust and weather and the ability to operate at temperatures down to -10 °C. This is an aspect highly requested by photographers.
More Complete and Versatile “GFX System”
The GFX medium format mirrorless system currently offers a range of seven FUJINON GF lenses covering focal lengths from 23mm to 250mm (equivalent to 18mm – 198mm in 35mm film format). All GF lenses have a resolving power of up to 100MP, meaning they are future-proof for technological advancements. They are also dust and weather resistant and designed to operate at temperatures down to -10 °C, to withstand the toughest conditions and be the ideal tool for professional photographers.
Tethered shooting is an essential part of a professional photographer’s workflow. The GFX system supports tethering software “HS-V5 for Windows” and “Tether Shooting Plug-in PRO for Adobe® Photoshop®”. Additionally, “Capture One Pro (FUJIFILM)” will be released, further expanding options for commercial and fashion photography studio sessions. This will allow professional photographers to incorporate the GFX system into their usual workflow.
Bluetooth Compatibility for Advanced Connectivity
This is the first model in the GFX system to support Bluetooth “low energy” technology. Captured images can be easily and quickly transferred to smartphones and tablets via the FUJIFILM Camera Remote app.*1 Image sensors measuring 36mm x 24mm
*2 Operating weight (including battery and recording media weight)
*3 Scheduled for release in October 2018 to bring LCD / EVF color adjustment and other functions to the GFX 50S
