Firefox 8 is available for download and features a significant innovation that directly engages the social field: search within Twitter.
The new version of the Mozilla Foundation’s browser is ready: Firefox 8.0 arrives with not many new features but with the clear intention to embrace the social network.
It certainly seems so, in fact, since by downloading Firefox 8.0 and launching the installation, you will immediately notice some changes in the navigation bar.
In particular, you can see the appearance of the search option “Twitter“: the browser will search the keywords of interest within the tweeting social network.
At the moment, the results come directly from the English version of Twitter because the option is only available for some versions of Firefox 8, and the Italian version is not yet among them; however, it has already been officially announced that in upcoming updates it will be possible to also search within local tweets.
Another significant aspect of Firefox 8 is the increasingly strict enforcement regarding the functioning of third-party add-ons: a tough approach and more restrictions, to avoid unwanted or completely unaware installation of applications on one’s own PC.
With Firefox 8.0, therefore, the system will launch a window where it will be explicitly asked whether you want to install a certain third-party app or not.
Besides an understandable security concern, the developers have made it a question of speed: third-party add-ons tend to slow down processes related to page loading as well as the startup itself.
Interestingly, unlike what IE9 does, Firefox 8 allows hardware acceleration on Windows XP, via Direct 3D API.
“Speed“: the watchword continues to be this. Speed of browsing, tab opening, JavaScript code execution, and new releases coming up.
Firefox’s journey continues steadily and confidently, so much so that the calendar for the next releases is already known: Firefox 9 is expected around Christmas – December 20th, to be precise – while Firefox 10 and Firefox 11 are, respectively, in Aurora and Nightly build versions.
