Some time ago – in mid-February 2014 – we reported on an innovation related to personal settings to be displayed on Facebook.
A significant new feature was indeed made available on the US platform: the possibility ofselecting the gender identity to specify upon registration.
Alongside the traditional “male” and “female”, many other statuses have appeared, to better personalize the Facebook profile in relation to perceived sexual identity.
From “trans man” to “trans woman” to “bisexual”, the available options were diverse but limited solely and exclusively to US subscribers.
However, today thechoice of gender identitycan also be specified on theItalian platformof the social network.
Italian subscribers will find 58 options to “categorize themselves” more specifically and in detail, choosing from definitions in Italian, neologisms, or more slang terms.
In addition to the more classic “bisexual”, “trans”, or “transgender”, there are indeed other terms, such as bigender, agender, or even afemminiello” with a long and historic Neapolitan dialectal tradition.
In other countries where this novelty has been introduced, Facebook has also included typical dialectal terms from specific local realities.
No longer two gender identities but a whole range of choices to present oneself to the world, or at least to the world that revolves around one’s contacts on the social network.
All of this was designed in collaboration with Arcigay, which was asked to indicate the most recurrent and numerically significant sexual “categories” in Italy.
So, how can you customize your profile, indicating your gender identity?
Simply log in, go to “About” and then again to “Basic Information”.
Under the “Sex” heading, next to what is already set, you will see – by hovering the mouse over it – the “edit” option.
Clicking it will open the drop-down menu with the available choices: “woman”, “man”, and “custom”.
Here you can then choose the option to be displayed on your profile.
