Facebook introduces trending topics

Facebook implements the trending topic mechanism after the introduction of hashtags: the experimentation has begun.

Facebook is second to none in terms of numbers, however, in recent times it appears evident that the social network’s staff is often drawing inspiration from other social platforms.
In particular, it is Twitter‘s functionalities that are evidently so appreciated at Facebook’s headquarters, that they end up becoming new elements in communication and sharing within the social network created by Mark Zuckerberg.
Thus, after introducing hashtags, here come the trending topics.
It is learned that the “trending box” experiment has begun, a dedicated space at the top right of the timeline where the day’s buzzwords will appear.
The Wall Street Journal revealed the news, informing that the testing phase has already started on a limited number of US profiles, as always happens when introducing new features.
As always, we wonder if the new solution will take user privacy into account, but at the moment – also considering the operating mechanism of hashtags on Facebook, there is no reason to believe that private profiles should fear inclusion in search results through the trending box.

Not much else is known about it: it is hypothesized – and hoped – that something different from Twitter will be seen.
Indeed, there is talk of a search that is not only textual but also semantic, which will therefore be equally incorporated into the trending topics.
Work on this novelty has only recently begun, so it is not yet possible to establish how long the box will appear on Italian profiles and, more generally, on all registered Facebook users.
