No trace of Facebook Phone, although HTC First exists: Facebook has presented Facebook Home for Android.
The much-awaited presentation event of the new features from Facebook has arrived, and with it, few major innovations.
Those who were expecting an announcement about the release of a Facebook Phone have been disappointed once again, although it should be specified that – as anticipated on FullPress a couple of days ago – the HTC First exists and played a role in the event a few hours ago.
However, the utmost attention was reserved by patron Mark Zuckerberg for Facebook Home, a new feature available starting April 12 on Android devices, via download.
The only smartphone that will natively feature it at the moment will be precisely the HTC First.
What is Facebook Home, then?
It is a new ecosystem, different from the concept of an app and at the same time not exactly an operating system itself, which will transform every smartphone into a “Facebook-based” device.
Once installed, access to the social network will be immediate; it will be a kind of home page for navigation.
This means that, unlike what the Facebook app does, Facebook Home will always remain active. However, this leaves doubts – as often happens with Facebook innovations – about the privacy guaranteed to users who will thus have perpetual access to new features for the use of their device, especially if they tend to activate GPS.
There is an advantage for regular Facebook users: they will always have direct access to the social network and its services, including chat and instant messaging.
Probably, Zuckerberg’s idea to avoid producing a Facebook Phone is not entirely wrong: rather than providing a single device to attract more attention to Facebook, it is perhaps simpler to convince users to download something similar to an app, making the use of the medium the same for everyone.
It would probably have been more difficult to position a smartphone on the global market that – rightly so – might not have met the tastes or spending capacity of all Facebook subscribers.
It is in software development that the Facebook team is strongest, and thus it seems they have decided to continue down this path in the further development of the social network, trying to conquer more market share and usage in the mobile sector as well.
Zuckerberg states that this new feature puts people at the center and no longer apps; moreover, he hopes that Facebook Home will soon be available for iOS as well.
It should be noted that Facebook Home will initially be compatible only with a few smartphones, specifically with the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S3 e Samsung Galaxy S4It is not known when it will be possible to download it on other Android devices as well.
